Community Profiles

THREE FORKS, MONTANA

Three Forks, a small community of 1,800 residents, is located 31 miles west of Bozeman It is a western town with an easy-going ambience. It offers schools K-12, a library, healthy businesses, a 9-hole golf course and plenty of recreational opportunities, especially fishing and canoeing on the surrounding rivers.

The permanent community at this headwaters location has undergone an evolutionary development. The first community was Gallatin City in 1862. It moved after a few years across the river to catch the stagecoach trade and was known as Gallatin City II. After losing the county seat to Bozeman in 1867 it suffered a decline. Around 1871 it was known as Shed’s Bridges for James Shed who had built several toll bridges, a toll house and a hotel. Then the name was changed to Bridgeville when the bridges were operated by two gentlemen (Paul and Hanley). Paul and Hanley then sold their interests to a group of Englishmen who incorporated the town. The name Three Forks appeared on the purchase papers and this area is known as Old Town.

When in 1908 the Milwaukee Railroad reached Three Forks, the town’s location with its rivers, sloughs and bridges was not desirable. So the railroad company chose a level expanse of land, platted the townsite and encouraged growth by building a roundhouse and other railroad buildings. The new Three Forks got off to a booming start.

Present day development in the Three Forks area is taking place in the rolling hills slightly northwest of town with several new subdivisions offering small acreage parcels. Three Forks has much to offer whether you are looking to raise a family, start a business or are ready to retire and enjoy the beauty of Montana.
