Manhattan, Montana

Manhattan Montana, located about 18 miles west of Bozeman, is a quiet little town with a population of approximately 1,400.

Downtown Manhattan has the traditional town offerings of a bank, grocery store, hardware store plus some delicious dining at local cafes and restaurants. It is not without cultural interest for it boasts an art gallery, antique shop and museum. Manhattan handles its local needs with a medical clinic, dentist and chiropractor as well as other professional services.

Manhattan received its name from the early establishment of the Manhattan Malting Company which was founded by a group of men from New York. Dutch settlers from the Netherlands and various areas of the United States were encouraged to immigrate to the Manhattan area in the 1890s. Here they began the rigors of farming – primarily oats, wheat, barley and potatoes. The adjoining communities of Amsterdam and Churchill grew up also midst the tidy and prosperous farms.

Today it is still a pleasure to drive through the gently rolling hills where the main agricultural industries are seed potatoes, wheat, dairy and beef. Manhattan is also home to cottage businesses including food specialties and wood carving.

Along with local church and school (K-12) activities, Manhattan hosts several seasonal community events. The popular Potato Festival in August has food, music, vendors and activities plus an antique and classic car, truck and tractor show.

This small-town rural area of Gallatin Valley is a special place to call home. Several new subdivisions which offer building lots for sale are making it a possibility for more families to enjoy the Old West charm of Manhattan, Churchill and Amsterdam.
