Livingston has been a railroad town from the start. The town came into being in 1882 as a result of the Northern Pacific Railway realizing that the location was excellent for servicing steam engines before the ascent over the BozemanPass. The railway company also established Livingston as the gateway to YellowstoneNational Park by heavily promoting to Eastern tourists the sixty mile train ride from Livingston to the park. For years to come the Livingston economy depended on the railroad as its major support. The center for rebuilding train engines has until very recently been ever present in this small town.
Today trains still play a roll in Livingston. One historical attraction is the Livingston Depot, a beautifully restored rail station and museum. There is the YellowstoneGatewayMuseum, with its caboose on the front lawn. It has displays not only on railroading, but also pioneering, natural history, geology and much more.
Livingston has become an art haven with writers, actors, artists and dancers contributing to its environment. With the YellowstoneRiver flowing around this small city, Livingston has become a filming location (A River Runs Through It, The Horse Whisperer) and a home to The International Fly Fishing Federation with its museum and annual fishermen celebration.
Livingston, which has for many years held a population around 7,000, is seeing the beginning of some sizable growth with the building of new homes and the approval of subdivisions which expand the city limits. In recent years people working in Bozeman are opting to buy homes in Livingston and commute to work. The small town atmosphere and the affordability of housing have stimulated this growth.
Livingston is the county seat of Park County. Although the railroad business has dwindled, the tourist and service industries, a lumber mill, and now a large, successful printing company are sources of employment for local residents. Besides providing all the necessary community services and conveniences one expects in a small town, Livingston offers a bevy of recreational and inspirational resources in its mountains, valleys and rivers that are within easy driving distance of this picturesque town. A visit will show you why many want to call Livingston home!
