So how did Bozeman get its name? Bozeman’s namesake, John Bozeman, was a handsome, gambling-loving man who sought shorter routes between Idaho mines and the States. Traveling across the Gallatin Valley and into the eastern pass to the Yellowstone River, he developed a route known as the Bozeman Trail or Bozeman Pass.

In August of 1864, a meeting of settlers was held and the town of Bozeman was formally established with John Bozeman acting as chairman and as the recorder of land claims. John Bozeman was not active very long in the town’s development, for he was killed in 1867 by Indians while traveling on business.

Early settlers moving west in search of gold and a new life recognized the agricultural potential in the rich and fertile Gallatin . Potatoes, hay and grain (mainly wheat, barley and oats) have been raised from the early days to the present. Flour mills were established and dairy herds, beef and sheep production flourished. Agriculture still prospers in the valley.

The Bozeman of today offers many housing options to choose from. New land developments within and without the city limits include parks and open space. You can choose a Victorian, a contemporary condominium, a 1960s classic, a bungalow from the 1930s, or a luxurious custom-built home on an acre or more. There is something for everyone.

Fondly known as the “Bozone” by some, Bozeman has the best of natural beauty, outdoor activities, city life and commerce . . . a place to love and call home!
